R2880: Which is the correct paper print path to load my media into and what settings should I select in the printer driver?

RELATES TO:

  • Stylus Photo R2880
  • Supported media types
  • Recommended print paths for loading paper, CD/DVD media, special media, roll paper, and Epson fine art papers

EXPLANATION:

driverIt is important to ensure that you select the correct paper type and print path for the paper you are printing onto. You will then need to load the selected paper into the correct print path of the printer.

Refer to the table below for an example of supported Epson media types and the supported print path. The media types available to select in the printer driver depend on whether the Photo Black (PK) or Matte Black (MK) ink cartridge is inserted in the printer and updated in the driver.

Glossy media types are only available to select in the driver when the Photo Black (PK) ink cartridge is inserted into the printer. Matte media types are only available to select in the driver when the Matte Black (MK) ink cartridge is inserted into the printer.

You will also need to update the cartridge information in the printer driver. For more information, see the following Related Article:

  • Some of the media types in the table above are not listed in the printer driver but the recommended paper setting is listed with the media name. For most papers, a specific ICC profile is available to download from the Epson website and individual media guides may also be available.

  • For individual media guides, see the Online Support & Manuals section of the R2880 support site.

Print path, paper and weight specifications
Print path Supported thickness or weight
Sheet (default, Auto Sheet Feeder for cut sheet media only) Weight: From 64 - 90g/m² plain paper
over 90g/m² (supported Genuine Epson media only)
Roll (roll paper path) Weight: From 64 - 90g/m² plain paper
over 90 - 255 g/m² (supported Genuine Epson media only)
Manual - Roll Number of sheets: Load one sheet at a time only.
Manual - Front Thickness: 1.3mm
Size: from 20 x 25 cm (8 x 10 in) to A3+.
Number of sheets: Load one sheet at a time only.

Note:

Non-genuine Epson media is not supported, but if you do wish to use it, compare the media's specifications to those of the Genuine Epson media listed above and follow the instructions supplied by the paper manufacturer. For special media such as fine art media, the rear manual feed path (Manual - Roll) may be most appropriate.

Printing onto sheets in the front manual feed slot

To print onto EPSON Enhanced Matte Poster Board, you must load the board one sheet at a time into the front manual feed slot. Make sure that Manual - Front is selected in the printer driver. You can use A3+ size thick paper with a maximum thickness of 1.3mm.

For instructions on loading paper into the front manual feed slot, see Loading Thick Paper.

  • For Windows: Select Manual - Front as the Source setting on the Main tab. We recommend using the Advanced mode on the Main tab.
  • For Mac OS X: Select Manual - Front for the paper size you are using (for example A3+ Manual - Front) as the Paper Size from the Page Setup dialogue box (or Print > Print Settings for Mac OS X Leopard/Snow Leopard).

For detailed instructions on making printer settings for Windows and Mac OS X, see Printing on Thick Paper in your User's Guide.

Note:

  • For the front manual feed slot (Manual - Front), only load one board at a time.
  • Be sure to remove the roll paper holder when printing on thick paper. Otherwise, the paper is ejected and a paper jam error occurs.
  • Be sure to insert the thick paper while the power is on. Otherwise, automatic print position adjustment may not take place after inserting the thick paper. If you insert the thick paper in a different way (for example, if you insert the thick paper into the printer and then turn the power off and then back on), the printer may be damaged.
  • Since the paper feeds through the printer from the front to the rear, make sure there is enough space at the rear of the printer for the thick paper to eject completely.

Printing onto sheets in the rear manual feed slot

To print onto single sheets loaded into the rear manual feed slot, make sure that Manual - Roll is selected in the printer driver. For instructions on loading paper into the rear manual feed slot, see Loading Paper into the Rear Manual Feed Slot.

  • For Windows: Select Manual - Roll as the Source setting on the Main tab. We recommend using the Advanced mode on the Main tab.
  • For Mac OS X: Select Manual - Roll for the paper size you are using (for example A3+ Manual - Roll) as the Paper Size from the Page Setup dialogue box (or Print > Print Settings for Mac OS X Leopard/Snow Leopard).

For detailed instructions on making printer settings for Windows and Mac OS X, see Printing on Cut Sheets in your User's Guide.

Note:

  • For the rear manual feed slot (Manual - Roll), only load one sheet at a time.
  • Make sure that you attach and use the supplied rear sheet guide.
  • You can leave the rear sheet guide attached to the printer, except when printing on roll paper.

Printing onto roll paper

With the roll paper holder attached to the printer, you can print on roll paper, which is convenient for banner printing.

To print onto roll paper, make sure that Roll is selected in the printer driver.

For instructions on loading paper into the rear manual feed slot, see Loading and Removing Roll Paper.

  • For Windows: Select Roll as the Source setting on the Main tab. We recommend using the Advanced mode on the Main tab.
  • For Mac OS X: Select Roll for the paper size you are using (for example A3+ Roll) as the Paper Size from the Page Setup dialogue box (or Print > Print Settings for Mac OS X Leopard/Snow Leopard).

For detailed instructions on making printer settings for Windows and Mac OS X, see Printing on Roll Paper in your User's Guide.

Note:

  • For the roll paper feed path (Roll), make sure that you install the roll paper holders and load the roll paper following the steps described in the User's Guide.
  • Make sure that the rear sheet guide is not attached to the printer.
  • Make sure the front printer cover is open and the output tray is stored in the printer.
  • Do not load the roll paper into the sheet feeder for cut sheets.
