Epson Scan displays the error Cannot communicate with the scanner. What should I do?

If Epson scan fails to communicate with the scanner you will see the below error:

Epson Scan can be used to scan via USB and via a wireless or wired network.

Expand the section below related to the connection methord required.

Note:

Epson Scan by default is set up for scanning locally via USB.

USB

  1. Open Epson Scan Settings

  2. Select your product from the drop down list

  3. Click the Test button.

  4. Expand the section below related to your test results.

Successful Test

  1. Click OK

  2. Click OK to close Epson Scan Settings

  3. Your product is now ready to scan via USB

Unsuccessful Test

If the test was unsuccessful check the following steps below, after each step preform a new test:

  1. Check the product is powered on.

    If the product will not power on, make sure of the following:
    • The power is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not an extension cable.
    • Try a different power cable.
  2. Unplug the USB cable and plug the USB cable in both the PC or Mac and the product.

  3. Try a different USB cable

  4. In the Windows Device Manager, make sure your scanner’s name appears under Imaging devices without a question (?) or an exclamation (!) mark, or a red X. If the scanner appears with one of these marks or as an unknown device, uninstall Epson Scan, then reinstall it.

Network

  1. Open Epson Scan Settings

  2. Select your product from the drop down list

  3. Set Connection Type to Network.

  4. Click Add

  5. Click the IP address in the list and click OK

    6. Note:

      If the IP address is not shown in the list click Enter Address

    1. Type in the IP address of the All in one printer or scanner

  6. Click Test

    7. Successful Test Unsuccessful Test

  7. Expand the section below related to your test results.

If the Test is Successful

  1. Click OK

  2. Click OK to close Epson Scan Settings

  3. Your product is now ready to scan wirelessly

If the Test is Unsuccessful

  1. Click OK

  2. Make sure the product is turned on

  3. Print a Wi-Fi Status sheet or check the scanners network settings to verify the following information:
    • Confirm if using Wi-Fi that both devices are connected to the same network SSID
    • Confirm the correct IP address for the product is listed in the scanner list

  4. Click Test.
