When I try to print, I'm notified that "the black ink cartridge differs from the one installed in the printer". How can I activate auto switching between Photo and Matte Black cartridges?

RELATES TO:

  • Stylus Photo R3000
  • Auto switching between Photo Black and Matte Black ink cartridges
  • Mac OS X Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion (OS 10.4.4 and higher)

EXPLANATION:

When Photo Black is active in the printer and you send a print job after selecting a Matte, Fine Art or Plain paper in the printer driver, the print job may stop and you see the following message:

The black ink cartridge differs from the one installed in the printer. Change the black ink cartridge in the printer.

Unlike previous models, both Photo Black and Matte Black inks can be loaded simultaneously. You can switch between the two via the printer driver to match the media in use.

To avoid this issue, you can activate the auto switching setting. With auto switching feature enabled, the printer will automatically switch to using the black ink type suitable for the paper type you intend to print to.

Do the following to enable auto switching in the Epson driver (version 8.36):

Note:

If you are using a later version of the driver, the options mentioned below may be found in different locations, click here to view instructions for enabling the auto switching setting using driver version 9.00.

  1. Click the Utility button in the printer job list window.

  2. The Epson Printer Utility 4 window opens. Click the Driver Settings button.

  3. Click into the check box beside Different Black Ink Cartridge to remove the check, thereby deactivating the notification.

  4. Close the Driver Settings and Utility windows in turn.

When you close the windows, the printer automatically proceeds with the black ink change operation and after completing it, prints out the print job. Also, auto switching is permanently activated and you will not receive any future warning notifications about mismatching black ink types before printing.

Enabling auto switching in the Epson driver (version 9.00)
  1. Click the Utility/Printer Setup button in the printer job list window.

  2. Click into the Driver tab and click the Different Black Ink Cartridge Notification drop-down box and select Off.

  3. Click OK and the changes will be saved.

The printer automatically proceeds with the black ink change operation and after completing it, prints out the print job. Also, auto switching is permanently activated and you will not receive any future warning notifications about mismatching black ink types before printing.

Changing the black ink type without disabling the notification

However, if you would prefer to still receive this notification to avoid accidental print outs with the wrong black ink type, you can change the black ink type via the printer's LCD panel instead.

Make sure that the 'Different Black Ink Cartridge' notification described above is enabled. Then, each time you want to change the black ink type, do the following:

  1. Press the OK button to display the Menu.
  2. Use the left and right arrow buttons to select Change Black Ink in the menu and then press the OK button.
  3. Choose the type of black ink you intend to switch according to current settings and press the OK button.
  4. Choose Yes and press the OK button.

Now these settings have been made, the printer will change the black ink type and afterwards print out the print job. For the next print job with a mismatching black ink type you will now still get the warning notification.
